Residential Electricians FAQs

Why are my lights flickering?
Flickering lights are more often than not due to a faulty light bulb. We always recommend first replacing the blub to see if that solves the problem.
In order instances, a flickering light may have to do with appliances like a microwave or a vacuum cleaner getting turned on. Large appliances can use a lot of power and this can sometimes result in flickering.
If all the lights in your home begin flickering this may be a sign of power arching. This is a serious hazard and if you suspect that power arching is affecting your property call a residential electrician as soon as possible. -
Why is my light switch hot?
There can be a number of reasons for a light switch getting hot for example:
- An Overloaded Switch
Just like an electrical socket, a light switch can become overloaded. If too much power is being moved through a power switch it will begin to get hot. An overloaded light switch can be dangerous and you should always call an electrician when you notice a light getting hot
- Failing Switch
Eventually, a light switch will begin to wear out. Once the components ware down, electricity flows more freely and this creates heat. Again, this can be a fire risk and an electrician should be called immediately.
- Faulty Wiring
Improper wiring will generate heat behind the switch and could be an early warning sign of a potential fire.
